Introduction:

Our Tomorrow Foundation is an Environmental Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) that is Afrocentric. It is an aggregation of African youths both in Africa and the diaspora, who are driven by a strong desire to bring to the fore of global consciousness the dire consequences of climate change in Africa.

Some Stats:

Unknown to many, seven of the 10 countries that are most vulnerable to climate change are in Africa. Extreme weather changes coupled with the Covid-19 pandemic has created a perfect storm for Africa as human health, food and water security and socio-economic development are now severely threatened. Infact, according to the Food and Agriculture organization of the UN, in the drought-prone sub-Saharan African countries, the number of undernourished people has increased by 45.6% since 2012.

As if this is not frightening enough, the African Climate Policy Centre further projects that the GDP in the 5 African sub-regions will decrease significantly as a result of a global temperature increase. It postulates that for every 1-4 degree Celsius increase in global temperatures relative to pre-industrial levels, Africa’s overall GDP will decrease by 2.25% to 12.12%.

Beyond the UNEP-commissioned research that estimates the cost of adapting to climate change across Africa at $50 billion annually by 2050, there is also the challenge of desertification in parts of West Africa, which is the underlying basis of the ever increasing herders/farmers conflicts across several African countries. The effect is the significant loss of life and threatened food supplies in these countries.

Our Tomorrow Foundation hopes to create a platform for the younger generation to fully appreciate these challenges as we strive to address this hurdle that presently  represents a major threat to Africa achieving its sustainable development goals
